About The Mimes Studio

The Mimes Studio of Stefan Niedzialkowski has been in existence in Warsaw since 1994. The basic task for its students is to learn mime art and especially to participate in workshops and regular classes designed to develop the participants' creativity and encourage a unique and personal approach to theatre. During Stefan Niedzialkowski's classes, students develop new ways of expressing values and notions which transgress spoken word. As the result of various exercises, they gradually gain control over their thoughts and the movements of their bodies. The aim of Stefan Niedzialkowski's method of teaching mime art is to ensure that the mime actor's body becomes a mirror for his thoughts and emotions.

Unlike other fields in the art, where the student can learn from many different schools and teachers, the mime student can learn only from very few. The Mimes Studio offers a great opportunity to study with internationally acclaimed master teacher, Stefan Niedzialkowski.

“The tradition of pantomime has existed in Poland for many years. Henryk Tomaszewski, great artist and founder of the Wroclaw Pantomime Theatre, won the admiration and acclaim of audiences and critics around the world. His theatre has been acknowledged as one of the greatest achievements of international theatre of the 20th centrury. The wonderful tradition of pantomime is being continued and developed by Stefan Niedzialkowski, a celebrated mime, teacher and director, who worked with Henryk Tomaszewski for 11 years, but also has collaborated with such artists as Marcel Marceau.” (from “What Where When” WARSZAWA, Maciej Proliński).

Currently, Stefan Niedzialkowski teaches at The Mimes Studio in Warsaw.

The exercises presented by Stefan Niedialkowski are geared to the level of phisical condition of the students and no previous ecxperiences is reguired. Classical mime is being used as a foundation for an in-depth exploration of the world of thoughts and emotional experiences. During the classes Stefan Niedzialkowski proposes general physical exercises, specific mime exercises (especially different quality of energy in your body), isolations, coordination of movement, breathing techniques, identifications exercises and finally – improvisation.

During the classes students have to pay great attention to the unique concentration needed for the mime actor to project the world of thoughts and feelings. Each movement has to be the result of internal change, it has to show the process of emotional experiences and the psychology of a character. Using the whole body as dramatic instrument the mime student has to motivate with conviction even the smallest change in his/her movement.

The students in the classes represent different level of experience and they all work together with Stefan Niedzialkowski. Each meeting in the class is unique work with the master. It is a studio in which the student can learn from the others in spite of his knowledge and experience in the sphere of mime theatre.

Those who participate in Stefan Niedzialkowski’s classes (the classes are small about 5 to 13 people) are encouraged to find their own “technique”/”style”/“expression” to show essential human inner experiences in universal way.
